Owen and his father Kurt Flynn were camping in the woods when the curse first came to our world. Stunned, they wandered around Storybrooke, puzzling how they could have missed a whole town the day before. When Owen gave Regina a small gift for letting him sit in her favorite seat, she realized the emptiness of her curse and wanted to have someone to share it with. She had a connection with the boy, who recently lost his mother and also felt like a fish out of water. Growing fonder of the child, Regina tried to talk the two into staying in town, but to no avail. Desperate, she had Kurt Flynn arrested to force him to stay longer. Owen managed to escape when he made Regina realize that he could never be happy when forced to love someone. He fled at his Kurt's request, vowing to find his father again, no matter what it took.
After the curse was broken, Owen returned, now going by the name of Greg Mendell. Due to what had happened to his father and the lonely life he had been forced to live because of Regina, his hatred for magic was strong. Greg at last was able to enter the town and begin his search for his father. A pawn who had been working unaware for Peter Pan under the guise of destroying magic, Greg and his girlfriend Tamara tortured Regina, only to find out that she had killed his father years before.
Instructed by their elusive boss and blinded by their hatred, Greg and Tamara captured Henry and took him to Neverland, where they found out that they had been tricked. Their mission all along had been Henry, and their foolish, unquestioning faith in their made-up cause had been their downfall. When confronted by Lost Boys, Greg warned them that if there was no way to get home, then he would never hand Henry over to them. As punishment for disobeying orders, Pan's shadow ripped Greg's shadow from him. He died a fool's death helping Peter Pan save the one thing he had always sought to destroy.
