Pinocchio was lovingly carved out of enchanted wood by the carpenter Gepetto, who wanted a son so badly that the Blue Fairy granted his wish and turned Pinocchio into a live puppet. Because he saved his father in the storm from the whale, the Blue Fairy turned Pinocchio into a real boy, admonishing him to remain brave, truthful, and unselfish, for only then would he remain a real boy.
A short time later, with the queen's curse looming in the near future, Gepetto was tasked with carving a wardrobe out of enchanted wood, similar to what Pinocchio had been carved out of. Although the tree's magic could protect two people, Gepetto couldn't bear to let his son be cursed. He sent Pinocchio through the wardrobe before Snow White's baby, instructing him to look after the child and help her to believe and fulfill her destiny to save them all. Once in our world, Pinocchio quickly was distracted and left Emma in the hands of unloving foster parents to escape alone. As he grew older, he was drawn in by the world's pleasures, and ignored his promise to his father. After searching for two years, August found Emma, and talked Neal into letting her serve his prison sentence. Only by ending the relationship would Emma be free to go to Storybrooke to break the curse. When Neal gave August money to give to Emma to use once she was free, August took the opportunity to flee to Hong Kong and continue his selfish life. At 8:15 am, the time when Emma made time move in Storybrooke, August was given a painful reminder of how far he had strayed from his promise to the Blue Fairy. He slowly began to turn back into wood.
Desperate to save himself, August returned to Storybrooke and tried to convince the savior about the curse. But his selfish choices came back to haunt him, and Emma's cynical attitude from growing up without his guidance prevailed. August took completely to wood, until Emma broke the curse. Afterwards, he was awakened, but remained wood because of his failing to be brave, truthful, and unselfish. Only when he risked his life to warn the others about Tamara's evil plan was the Blue Fairy able to recognize his last moments of bravery and turned him back into a person - the young boy that had gone through the wardrobe all those years ago. He and Gepetto were able to have the life they had missed, and Pinocchio was given a second chance at a more selfless life.
