"Snow Drifts" is part one of our season three's epic finale. It brings us a new adventure while giving us a feel of the first season - how fitting for a second half that features on coming home. Hook and Emma are sent through to the past, giving us the pleasure of seeing all our favorite characters in their flashback times, only through new eyes. It's like Emma and Hook are getting the fun of seeing what we saw in the first season and enjoying it at much as we did, only putting their own mark on fairy tale history, including getting a few pages in Henry's book. And Emma is as hilarious as a fairy-tale princess as Hook is in New York. We are given the playful banter that never we can't get enough of, swordfights, sweet family moments (those Charming family hugs never get old), a town celebration, romance, a fairy-tale ball, a wedding, and a major ending twist that no one saw coming. It was a fresh and fun way to end the season, with something so different and amazing that we were glued to the screen the entire way through. Our characters must find their home - for Hook, it's with Emma, for Emma, it's with her family, and for Rumple it's with Belle.
As I previously mentioned, the second half of season three is like a mirrored version of season one - similar but done in the completely opposite way. A curse is cast, someone's true love is sacrificed, a curse is broken by true love's kiss, people are reunited with their loved ones, and all magic has a price. But this time, Snow casts the curse to reunite with her daughter, and Charming is sacrificed out of love, not vengeance. Regina realizes that light is more powerful than darkness, and breaks the same curse she herself had previously cast with true love's kiss. Again Emma is reunited with her parents, Rumple and Belle are together again, Henry remembers his mother, and town is allowed to breath easier, celebrating their peaceful town once again with one another. But like every interesting twist, there is a dark side. Rumplestiltskin once warned Regina that enacting a curse through vengeance would leave a dreadful hole in her heart. His words come back to haunt her as their truth rings clear. At the end of the episode amongst the joyful celebrations, Regina is once again left with a void in her heart. Her lover has again been ripped from her, and this time, it's of her own making. If she had followed Tinkerbell's instructions and married Robin Hood, she would have saved herself this heartache, her quest for vengeance, and the lives of many people. But now more than ever does the queen realize the price of one's choices. One small move can have "catastrophic repercussions," and this week we are given the chance to find out how.

We are given a rare glimpse into Emma's past as the episode opens. She watches mournfully as a little girl is adopted (love the Mickey Mouse by the way), and although the supervisor tries to assure her that she will one day find a family, Emma has lost almost all hope of finding a home. I love when we get nuggets of the closed-mouthed savior's past, and we understand even more now just how much of a mark growing up alone has made on Emma. It sets the stage perfectly for the season's second theme: finding home. We see here the longing Emma has for belonging to someone. The savior has never had a home, and she has been searching for one all her life.
As per tradition, the town meets together to have a coronation ceremony for the new prince, who happily was rescued before Zelena could fully enact her curse. The town is all smiles, until Henry notices a light shooting into the air. Gold deduces that the time portal is open, and the gang rushes to the jail to find Zelena gone. David tries to watch the footage from the security camera, but Rumple changes the tape to look like Zelena killed herself. He warns everyone to stay away from the portal, since one small change in the past could influence history and change everything in the present. Unfortunately, Emma wasn't present for the warning. The savior is still planning to return with Henry to New York, ignoring everyone's objections. Running away has always been Emma's way of dealing with her problems, and this time is no different. While talking to Hook, Emma sees the magic coming from Zelena's portal. She rushes to the barn to try to stop it, despite Hook's protests. Although she tries to turn back, and portal pulls her in, and Hook comes after her, not willing to let his true love slip away.

Back to the Future
Emma figures out that she has landed at the time when Regina is in full power and in hot pursuit of Snow White, based on the Wanted posters plastered all over the Enchanted Forest. Emma is immediately greeted with the bloodthirsty Evil Queen in full fantastic costume. Hook holds Emma back from stopping Regina, wisely warning her to let all events alone; changing them could literally ruin their lives. They must try to fit in, even down to Emma changing into a peasant's clothes that were drying on the line. Emma decides that the best way to figure out how to get home is to the ask the most powerful man in the land: Rumplestiltskin. On the way, Emma catches a glimpse of her parents' first meeting. But she accidently distracts Snow White's thievery by cracking a branch, thwarting her parents' history. They continue their trek to the Dark Castle to seek the Dark One's advice. But Rumple finds them first, and although he tries to strangle Hook on site, Emma breaks through his suspicion by spouting off all of Rumple's intricately secret plans of getting back to his son. Curious, Rumple is forced to believe their story, as no one knows his carefully guarded secrets. He decides to help them in his own best interests, and sends them off to Prince Midas's ball to get Snow and Charming to meet. Hook and Emma go in search of Hook's past self, hoping that Hook can hire Snow White to get Charming's ring. Emma hilariously tries to keep the other Hook occupied, while our Hook makes a deal with Snow. The two manage to escape, with poor Smee scratching his head over the flurry of captains.
Not willing to leave anything to chance, Rumple appears with an invitation to Midas's ball. He transforms Emma and Hook into the right costumes, while cloaking them to make them look like other people, in case being recognized in our world could change history. The two waltz together, while Snow successfully meets Charming by hitting him in the head while stealing his ring. She gets away, but Emma is captured by the evil queen for interrupting a guard's shot at Snow. She is thrown into prison, right beside Maid Marion. Oh no! But her early experience with Neal pays off, and she easily escapes the cell by picking the lock. Despite Hook's warnings to change nothing in the past, Emma is unable to let an innocent woman die, and releases Marion.
