Love at First Burglary
Episode 3 tells us the true story of how Snow White and Prince Charming fell in love. And as usual, it's not the way that we think - it's better. We begin with Prince Charming riding in a carriage with his less-than-thrilled fiancé Princess Abigail, when they meet a tree that has fallen in the road. But as the prince examines the large impasse, he notices that the tree hasn't fallen; it's been cut. Just as he realizes that he's about to be ambushed, a scream sounds from Abigail as a hooded figure grabs a pouch of jewels and begins galloping away. Charming chases the figure and pulls off the cloak to reveal a woman: Snow White. And as most good stories begin, she smashes him in the jaw with a rock and disappears into the woods.
But the Charming and Snow are complete equals, and he is no more willing to give up than she is. He sets a trap for her, threatening to turn her over to the Evil Queen unless she gets the jewels back. On the way Snow successfully escapes by knocking him into the river, but is instantly captured by the queen's ever-present guards. Just in time, Charming's razor-sharp accuracy kicks in, and he shoots the guards and rescues Snow White. Having been chased all her life by the queen, Snow is clearly surprised and touched by someone who would risk his life to save her. They proceed to the Troll Bridge to do another trade, but the Trolls are suspicious and attack them. Snow White gets away, but looks back to see the prince being massacred on the bridge. Although she could escape, she chooses to do the right thing and returns to save him. Around her neck she carries a vial of dark fairy dust, something she had been saving for a face-to-face encounter with the queen. But she can't bear to let an innocent person die, and uses it on the trolls instead, turning them all into bugs.
On the way back to the castle, Charming returns the money to Snow in exchange for the jewels, and in particular, his engagement ring for Abigail. Snow tries it on for size, and the prince gazes at her with wonder. Although it was off to an interesting start: robbery, a smash in the face, and trolls, the two seem to be made for each other. They agree to always find each other if ever in need, and walk away, each turning to watch the other as they disappear from sight.

Going for a Stroll
We then see Snow White's cursed self, Mary Margaret, on an awful date with Dr. Whale. In this land Regina seems to have taken everything good away, leaving the same person minus their strongest qualities. While Snow was brave and beloved in the Enchanted Forest, here she is shy and lonely, with love seemingly out of her reach. She slowly walks home to find Emma planning to sleep in her car and invites her to stay at her house, but Emma is hesitant to let anyone in her life. Meanwhile, Henry has noticed that the hospital's John Doe, actually Prince Charming, has the same scar on his face as the one in his book. He knows that the only way to wake him up is to have Mary Margaret read their story to him to remind him of their past. To his surprise, Emma plays along, thinking that the plan will backfire and Henry will see the truth without being hurt. But Henry is right, and as Mary Margaret comes to the climax of the story, Charming grabs her hand. She frantically calls for the doctor, who assures her that she was imagining it, and promptly reports the brain fluctuation to the mayor. She purses her lips in anger. The curse has begun to weaken.
Henry is elated when he hears of his plan working, and tells Mary Margaret to read the rest of the story to him. When they return to the hospital, they discover that not only is John Doe awake, he has left the hospital and gone into the woods. Emma, Mary Margaret, Sheriff Graham, and Henry begin searching for him, despite Henry's protests that Charming is trying to find Mary Margaret. She indeed finds him by the Troll Bridge, and pulls him out of the water. It's not until she kisses him that he wakes up, but has no idea who he is. The curse has not yet had a strong effect on him; the false memories have nto yet been implanted in his brain. Everyone rushes to the hospital where a blond lady awaits - Princess Abigail, who also has a screwed-up memory, Regina has conveniently conjured a wife for Charming, someone who will stand in the way of Snow's happiness. As Snow stands at the window watching him through the glass, his eyebrows crease, as if he knows deep down that his rescuer is very familiar, but he's not sure how. She stands there and plays with a ring on her finger - the same one that they repossessed from the trolls. The attraction between them is unmistakable, even with their cursed memories.
Back in her little loft, Mary Margaret continues to play with the ring and feeling a strange connection to the coma patient. Just in time to end her loneliness, the doorbell rings. Behind the door stands Emma, who asks to stay. This is the savior's first permanent decision in Storybrooke, a step that brings that curse even closer to an end.
