As all dwarves are, Dreamy was hatched from an egg. Eager to see this new world, he emerged early and smiling, excited to see the woman who had dropped the fairy dust on him. He later found her - a fairy named Nova. Fascinated by the fairy, Dreamy and Nova fell in love and planned to sail the world. However, the Blue Fairy convinced him to abandon the plan and let Nova become the fairy she had always been meant to be. Because dwarves supposedly never fall in love, Dreamy dismissed his feelings as an illusion and returned to the mines, only to have his pickaxe rename him as "Grumpy."
Grumpy was thrown into jail for a crime that he didn't commit and there met Snow White. He set her free while fleeing the prison, and though he was caught, Snow White returned the favor and turned herself in so that he could escape. Because of that service, Grumpy and his dwarf brothers adopted Snow White into their family and allowed her to live with them. Both in the Enchanted Forest and Storybrooke, the dwarves remain loyal and fiercely protective of their precious Snow White.
