The Genie began as an unhappy prisoner in the lamp from Agrabah. He was released by King Leopold and given his freedom, as well as the king's last wish. He returned with the king to his palace to seek the one thing he had always been denied - true love. The Genie was instantly smitten by the king's wife, Regina. He gave her a mirror to show her that she was the fairest in the land to him. King Leopold found Regina's diary confessing to a man giving her the mirror, confirming the fact that he already knew - the queen was unhappy. The Genie stopped Regina from killing herself with a poisonous viper and instead killed the king with the serpents. Victorious, the Genie returned to his true love, only to find that she had been toying with him from the beginning, and had used the snake native to his land to frame him. Heartbroken, the Genie made his final wish: to never leave the queen's side and to look on her face always. As did every other wish, the wish ended poorly, and the Genie was again imprisoned, this time behind a mirror.
As in the Enchanted Forest, Sidney Glass's blind love for Regina makes him a puppet under her thumb. As a newspaper reporter, Sidney has eyes everywhere and does the queen's dirty work without question, even when it means taking the blame for a crime that he didn't commit. Fiercely loyal but weak, Sidney is not to be trusted.
