The Swashbuckler is Back
"The Jolly Roger" provides a breather between several intense episodes with the Wicked Witch and goes back to explain what happened to Captain Hook over the year that everybody else has forgotten. The story begins with a street-smart Hook who has grown rich from robbing carriages. Despite trying to go back to his old life, Hook's life is empty. Even among his old companions and beautiful wenches thrown his way, the captain is unable to return to the man that he used to be. Feigning happiness in his superficial existence, Hook cannot forget the one thing that he loves most: Emma Swan.
During a carefree evening in the tavern to celebrate his recent spoils, his merry-making is interrupted by a blow on the head by an angry Ariel. Her Prince Eric has been kidnapped, and because the man who captured him was aboard the Jolly Roger, she demands that the Captain return the Prince to her. Hook overpowers her and demands to know who the man was who overtook his ship. The only clue he has to go on is the knife that Ariel found with the initials "B.B." Charged with a new purpose, Hook eagerly sets out to find his ship, hoping that once he is aboard, he can at last forget his lost love and return to the swashbuckler he used to be.
Hook sets off with Smee and Ariel, who insists on his help based on the Pirates' Code - returning a favor in equal weight to the one given. She believes him to be a hero based on rumors of his help in Neverland, but Hook snaps that he has never stopped being a pirate. Reminders of his past only make the present more painful. At last they find the Jolly Roger, which has been overtaken by Captain Blackbeard. The two duel over the ship, but Blackbeard is tripped up over a broken board in the floor, being less familiar with the ship than Hook. About to kill him, Ariel begs Hook not to destroy him before he tells her where Prince Eric is being kept captive. Blackbeard makes his deal - either Hook can kill him and regain the Jolly Roger, but not find Prince Eric, or he can save the prince if he admits that he is no longer the cutthroat pirate that he used to be. Desperate to forget his pain over Emma, Hook throws the Captain overboard, along with the secret of Prince Eric's whereabouts. Ariel is upset over Hook's broken promise, and vows to find Eric, with or without his help. She jumps in the water and swims to find him.

Cursed Lips
In Storybrooke, we see a similar story. Ariel shows up on the beach, again searching for Prince Eric. She has forgotten the previous year, and goes in search of Hook since his memory is still intact. Feeling guilty over his poor decision the first time, Hook drags his feet, but stumbles upon Eric's cloak in Gold's shop. Belle pours Rumple's tracking potion on the cloak, and Ariel sets off after it, filled with new hope of finding her prince. The cloak goes to the docks and lands on the water. Ariel deduces that Eric must have drowned. Tearily she thanks Hook for his help and begins to leave, but the pirate's conscience prevails. He runs after her and tells her the whole truth of their search for Eric in the past year. Ariel is disbelieving of his change of heart and demands that he swear on the name of his true love that he has changed. When Hook names Emma Swan, Ariel disappears in a cloud of green smoke to reveal that Zelena was pretending to be the mermaid all along. In truth, Ariel found her Prince Eric long ago and escaped the curse. Zelena curses Hook's lips, and commands him to kiss Emma, or else she will start killing Emma's loved ones. Hook figures out that Zelena needs Emma's power removed; that she is a threat that Zelena cannot overthrow. Now he has a choice - kiss Emma and save her loved ones or hope that she can defeat the witch first?
